France police shootings: Three officers killed by gunman who is later found dead

The suspect, 48, said to be known to authorities on child custody issues, was later found dead, officials said.

A woman had fled to the roof of a house in a remote village near Saint-Just in the early hours of Wednesday.

The gunman killed one officer and wounded another. He then set fire to the house and killed two more officers who arrived. The woman was rescued.

President Emmanuel Macron said the nation shared the grief of the families of the police officers.

Bakersfield officials said officers opened fire at Francisco Serna seconds after he was pointed out to them.

Police said he refused officer commands to take his hands out of his pockets, and neighbours had complained he was threatening people and might be armed.

A 2015 study rated Bakersfield Police Department as the deadliest in the US.

Mr Serna's family said the shooting in the city, 110 miles (177km) north of Los Angeles, was murder.

The incident, which happened in September 2015,resulted in the indictments of two marshals on second degree murder and second degree attempted murder charges.

The marshals began pursuing the car after they witnessed an argument between a man and his girlfriend in front of a local bar, a source told CNN. Officers moved to detain the man, identified as Christopher Few, who took off in his car.

The pursuit ended in gunfire on a dead-end street in Marksville, Louisiana.

 

San Diego police officer fatally shot, another wounded

"It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our officers tonight," the San Diego Police Department said on Twitter.

The officers were shot during a traffic stop at about 11:00pm on Thursday local time in Southcrest, a south-eastern neighbourhood of San Diego, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.

They were taken to hospitals after the shooting.

One of the officers was shot multiple times and died, and the other was undergoing surgery early Friday, the newspaper reported.

A suspect shot dead at the scene was thought to be the only gunman involved, police said. Reports earlier suggested there was more than one gunman.

President Barack Obama said nothing justified attacks on police officers.

It is not clear what the motive is, or whether there is any link to the killing by police of a black man in the city nearly two weeks ago.

The shooting of Alton Sterling and another killing of a black man in Minnesota, led to widespread protests across the US.

But Thursday, little Olivia was standing in line with her mom, Rachel, to enter Castile's funeral. Philando Castile was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop on July 6.

"It saddens me that she won't be able to, you know," Rachel said as she held back tears. "Have the benefit of him being an amazing person next year and for years to come."
