Samoa police with close family ties under scrutiny

According to RNZ, the reports say members of the police who are working together with close family relatives have been given until December to decide who would be continuing in the service and who should be leaving.

Sources say this is the advice contained in a letter from the Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, who is now also the Minister of Police, directed at couples within the force as well as senior officers who have a son or a daughter in the police.

A senior officer says the advice was given to the ministry about three weeks ago.

Cabinet has also suspended Police Commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil from his duties, pending a court decision on new charges against him.

The charges, originally brought by Samoa Police, have now been transferred to the National Prosecution for processing and action.

According to the Police Service Act, an Inquiry may be called in to the performance or capacity of a Commissioner or Assistant Commissioner.

Police: Brazilian man allegedly held captive by family for at least 15 years

Police in the Brazilian city of Guarulhos say they have discovered a man who may have been kept captive by his family for at least 15 years.

Police in the city, which is in the greater Sao Paulo area, were on a drug raid Sunday evening when they entered a family home in error and discovered 36-year-old Armando Bezerra de Andrade in a filthy, stinking basement. Images of the room show a soiled mattress, padlocked windows and no light source. The door had no handle on the inside.

Police investigate discovery of man’s body in plantation

A group of young people found the deceased’s body at a plantation around mid-day last Friday and reported the matter to police.

"We cannot say whether it's murder, But I can tell you that the case is far from suicide and we are treating it as a homicide case," said Police spokesperson Sua Le Mamea Tiumalu.

"The deceased had gunshot wounds on his back, multiple gunshot wounds around the spine and injuries to the back of his head," he added.

The man is reported to be originally from Faga, Savaii but was living in Faleatiu as an in-law.

Fiji seeks Google help in plot probe

The case stems from an incident in November when an internet cafe owner, Rajneel Singh, claimed to have been beaten by police after he told them about an email found in his cafe about an alleged plot to kill all government MPs.

Tabloid Jubi reports that about 150 police personnel were deployed to hunt for the perpetrators of the attack on the Sinak Police Headquarters.

The Papua Police Chief, General Paulus Waterpauw has indicated that police believe they know who the suspects are and have homed in on their communities, searching also for stolen ammunition.
