Prince Harry makes vaccine plea at concert in LA

Prince Harry appeared alongside dozens of celebrities at the Vax Live event, a charity performance in aid of the international Covid vaccination effort.

Hosted by the singer Selena Gomez, the concert - to be aired on Saturday - featured performances from artists Jennifer Lopez and Foo Fighters.

US President Joe Biden also spoke.

Addressing thousands of fully vaccinated guests at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Prince Harry praised the efforts of front line workers during the pandemic.

Harry and Meghan to join Covid vaccine concert

The couple were announced as campaign chairs of the Vax Live event, organised by anti-poverty group Global Citizen.

US President Joe Biden will also appear at the concert, which is being hosted by pop star Selena Gomez.

"We will all benefit, we will all be safer, when everyone, everywhere has equal access to the vaccine," Harry and Meghan said.

"We must pursue equitable vaccine distribution and, in that, restore faith in our common humanity. The mission couldn't be more critical or important."

It was during the couple's interview with Oprah Winfrey that they spoke of the difficulties they had faced during their time as part of the royal family.

These included claims of racism by Meghan which Prince Harry confirmed.

Despite the couple's offer to work with the monarchy to help them move forward in a more inclusive way, Her Majesty and palace staff are thought to have opted to deal with matters themselves, announcing they will be hiring a diversity coach.

The move comes about a month after Harry, Queen Elizabeth II's grandson and his American wife Meghan made a final split and said they would not return as working members of the royal family.

Harry has spoken publicly about his struggles with grief following the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in a car crash in 1997.

Earlier this month, Meghan told TV interviewer Oprah Winfrey that living in the royal family had pushed her to the brink of suicide.

Winfrey told CBS News on Monday the prince "did not tell me who was part of those conversations".

The revelation that a family member wondered "how dark" Archie's complexion might be came during a TV interview that aired in the United States.

The Duchess of Sussex had described the remarks as a low point.

"He did not share the identity with me but he wanted to make sure I knew, and if I had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother or grandfather that were part of those conversations," Winfrey said.

The two-hour special airs in the U.S. at 8 p.m. ET, which is 1 a.m. on Monday in London. The British royal, 94, will be advised of the highlights later on Monday, an insider said.

“There is no way the queen will watch the interview tonight. She has a briefing early Monday morning,” the source told Us, noting that Queen Elizabeth II “will be focusing on the ongoings in her own country.”

In a rare one-on-one interview in which he discussed the pressures of royal life and his move away from London, Harry told "The Late Late Show" host James Corden that he decided he needed to "get (his) family out of here" and that he preferred the depiction of royal life seen on Netflix show "The Crown" to the one published in newspapers.

"We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health," he said during the segment. "I was like, this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do."

The decision means that honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be revoked and redistributed among working members of the royal family, the palace said in a statement.

But the couple said they will continue to be committed to their duties in Britain and elsewhere -- pointedly insisting that "service is universal."

A review of the couple's position since stepping back as senior royals last January was expected next month, but has been brought forward.

A spokesperson for the couple said they were "overjoyed" at the news.

It is the first fruit of Prince Harry and Meghan's podcast deal with Spotify.

The couple do not directly discuss their personal experiences of 2020, which started with them announcing they would step back as "senior" royals, before moving to the US.
