Fiji Cabinet approves two new public holidays

Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day will be celebrated on 29 May, while Girmit Day will be celebrated on 15 May.

Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day marks the anniversary of his death in 1958. Following Fiji's independence in 1970, this date was observed as a public holiday to commemorate his immense pioneering contribution to land management reform in Fiji.

Girmit Day is an opportunity to reflect on the arrival of indentured labourers to Fiji. In May 1879, the first batch of Indian indentured labourers arrived in the country on the ship Leonidas

Samoa General Elections public holidays cancelled

A notice issued by the Ministry of Commerce industry and Labour from the Office of the Electoral Commission confirmed the cancellation. 

The notice stated that “The public, business communities and shop owners, employers and workers are hereby advised that according to the public notice from the Office of the Electoral Commissioner to revoke the general election for 21st May 2021, public holidays scheduled for Thursday 20th and Friday 21st of May 2021 are now cancelled”.

Samoa’s new school year to start on 25 January

 The Ministry of Education, Sports and Calendar released its calendar, confirming the dates of the school terms and public holidays.

The first term will end on 2 April, which is also allocated for ‘Good Friday’ public holiday.

The second term beings on 19 April and ends on 25 June.

Term 3 begins on 12 July and ends on 17 September and the final school term will begin on 4 October and end on 10 December.

A two-week holiday period is allocated between the school terms.

There are eleven public holidays this year. 

   

Samoa government announces Christmas and New Year public holidays

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour said Tuesday, 25 December and Wednesday, 26 December are to be treated as public holidays.

Tuesday, 1 January and Wednesday, 2 January are also designated public holidays.

Chief Executive Officer, Pulotu Lyndon Chu Ling said shops selling goods my open during the public holidays as stipulated in the Public Holidays Act 2008.

“However, employers are advised to comply with relevant provisions under the Labour and Employment Relations Act 2013 pertinent to employees working on Public Holidays,” Pulotu said in a statement.
