Rio 2016: Olympic fart-smelling pools' green hue caused by hydrogen peroxide mix-up

A contractor added 80 litres of hydrogen peroxide to each of the diving and water polo pools last Friday, but organisers said they only found out on Tuesday when the water in the diving pool turned green during the women's 10-metre platform final.

The addition of hydrogen peroxide neutralised the chlorine and allowed algae to bloom, organisers said.

Rio 2016: Does the Chinese public have a victim narrative?

A brief shortlist might start with judges biased against Chinese athletes. In all Rio venues, the points of the gold stars on the Chinese national flag were misaligned.

On one occasion where a Chinese and US athlete drew for bronze, the Chinese flag was positioned below the American flag. An Australian and a French swimmer made doping allegations against a Chinese swimmer and failed to apologise.

And back to the beginning, China's gymnasts were robbed, China's weightlifters were robbed, China's swimmers were robbed.

Rio 2016: Matildas go down to Brazil in quarter-final shoot-out

Brazil won the shoot-out by 7-6 after 120 minutes of play in ordinary and extra time.

Australia's Matildas and the host nation were all square at 4-4 when five-time world player of the year Marta stepped up to the spot.

But goalkeeper Lydia Williams made an excellent save, giving Katrina Gorry a golden opportunity to slot the game-winner.

Again it was the goalkeeper who stood tallest, with Barbara diving to her right to make a brilliant save to deny the 2014 AFC women's player of the year.

Gymnast Yuri van Gelder thrown out of Rio for drinking

Having reached the men's rings finals on Saturday, the former world champion -- nicknamed the "Lord of the Rings" -- left the Athletes' Village a few hours later to celebrate. When he returned, he admitted he'd consumed alcohol.

The Dutch gymnastics association, KNGU, and the Dutch Olympic Committee (NOC-NSF) said in a joint statement Van Gelder, 33, had "gravely violated" team rules and that they had "no other choice" but to put him on the first plane home.

Love wins: Rugby player accepts on-field Olympic marriage proposal

Cerullo, 25, was part of the Brazilian women's team which finished ninth place in the first-ever Olympic rugby sevens event.

After watching the final between Australia and New Zealand, Enya, a manager at the stadium, took to the pitch for a special announcement of her own.

With microphone in hand and heart-shaped balloons on standby, Enya, 28, asked Cerullo to marry her.

North and South Korean gymnasts pose for Olympic selfie

Lee Eun-ju of South Korea and Hong Un-jong of the North took a quick smiling snapshot during the training period before the start of the Games.

The pictures of the two women have been widely praised as capturing the Olympic spirit.

North and South Korea are technically still at war with each other.

And relations between the two have been more tense in recent months, with recent missile launches from Pyongyang.

The most iconic photo of the Games?

Rio 2016: Second boxer held over alleged sex assault

She alleged Jonas Junius, 22, had grabbed her and tried to kiss her. She also accused him of offering her money to have sex.

Junius is competing in the light-welterweight division.

Last week, a Moroccan boxer was arrested by police after allegedly assaulting two female cleaners.

A Brazilian judge has ordered Hassan Saada to be detained for 15 days, pending an investigation, media reports said.

This could mean Saada is unable to take part in the Games.

Rio 2016: Gymnast Samir Ait Said breaks leg during Olympic vault

The 26-year-old's left leg folded beneath him as he landed badly during the men's qualification event.

Said, who won gold on the rings at the 2013 European Championships, was taken off on a stretcher and acknowledged the crowd as he departed.

French team leader Corrine Moustard-Callon said: "We don't know what happened, except it was his tibia."

She added: "He is in the hospital with a doctor now. We will do more exams to see if it is just the bone.

Rio 2016: Glowing ring appears over Brazil ahead of Olympic Games

Atop the 190-foot Véu da Noiva waterfall in Mangaratiba (a municipality on the outskirts of the state of Rio de Janeiro), her prismatic "Ring: One With Nature" -- a 10-foot acrylic ring, supported by a Teflon-coated stainless steel -- appears suspended in air.

Through a trick of the light, it seems to change hue -- blue, gold, transparent -- depending on the position of the sun and viewer.
