Samoa records 5 new Covd-19 cases

The Ministry of Health said the cases were recorded in the past seven days.

MOH also recorded a total of 288 cases that were unreported from the lab in March 2022.

There were a cumulative total of 192 positive cases detected at the Port of Entry since November 2022.

The ministry also recorded a cumulative total of 16,402 positive Covid-19 cases since the first community transmission was detected in 17 March, 2022.

     

Samoa completes draft regulations on aids to navigation

The draft was completed by the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure through the Maritime Division in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.

A statement issued by the government said prior to submission to Cabinet for approval the Consultation between all key stakeholders was carried out on Wed, 8th February 2023.

This enables the Ministry to explain and elaborate on the regulation purpose and its importance and to collect all the relevant information from the stakeholders to improve it.

US climate change grant to assist communities in Samoa and Fiji

A USAID spokesperson says the grants will help 49 vulnerable communities in Fiji and Samoa.

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency Samoa will receive about $US500,000 from the grant, and Live and Learn Environmental Education Fiji will be given close to a million dollars.

USAID deputy development advisor, Patrick Bowers, said the US government is committed to helping the Pacific's most vulnerable communities.

     

Dad cops 18 years jail term for raping daughter

Justice Tafaoimalo Leilani Tuala-Warren ordered a suppression order on the identity of the victim and the defendant according to a Radio Polynesia report.

The victim is now 17 years old, married and a mother and she says she is in disbelief that her own father would do this to her.

She has not told her husband about what happened and has not seen her father or his family since the offence.

The victim was 14 when the incident occurred several years ago.

The 40-year-old father was convicted by Assessors in November last year.

Two JICA volunteers return to Samoa

Nao Hara is placed with Fagalii Primary School as a volunteer for primary school education whilst Dr. Ryohei Sato will resume his work in veterinary medicine with the Animal Production & Health Division of Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Japan’s Ambassador to Samoa Keisuke Senta welcomed the volunteers and said, “ Samoan people have been waiting the arrival of JICA volunteers.”

Suspension 'attempt to force Samoan party leaders to quit' - academic

Former Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi and Human Rights Protection Party secretary Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi are challenging their 24-month suspension issued three months ago.

RNZ Pacific reports the suspension has come after a complaint lodged in court by Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa claiming contempt of court by the duo and other party members over comments they made against the judiciary following several court decisions which did not go the HRPP's way.

Samoa to host OFC Champions League qualifiers

The event will be an opportunity for the locals to cheer on the Lupe Ole Sooaga team and boost their chances to qualify to the OFC Champions League.

The competition is a chance for teams from domestic competitions in Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands and American Samoa to vie for a spot in the top tier competition. 

The four teams participating are from Tupapa Maraereanga (Cook Islands), Ilaoa Ma To’omata (American Samoa), Lupe Ole Soaga (Samoa) and Veitongo FC (Tonga).

Lupe Ole Soaga's first match will be against American Samoa's Ilaoa To’omata on 18 February.

Samoa, Nevada Guard Pair in Growing State Partnership Program

Samoa joins the Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Fiji as Pacific Island partners with the Nevada National Guard. These partnerships were formalized in 2014 and 2019, respectively. 

Drug suspect due to appear in Samoa court

Samoa Police have charged the suspect with possession of narcotics, after a tip was given to Tuasivi Outpost stating he was selling marijuana.

Police responded to the call and followed through. Officers found the suspect's car on the road and was then brought in for questioning. The suspect's car was searched and was found with 8 small packets of marijuana, 10 marijuana seeds, utensils, Samsung A12 cellphone, one 12 gauge bullet and cash totaling  $1258.70

The suspect was remanded in custody and until his mention in court today.
