The pair, Malele Atofu Paulo, also known as King Faipopo, and Lema'i Faioso Sione, are also facing a second charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

The two have been ordered to remain in custody until next Monday when they will appear for a plea hearing on the second charge.

The prosecution has opposed bail.

Meanwhile a third suspect, Taualai Leiloa, also known as Taualai Tuila'epa, has appeared separately on the same charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

Samoa calls on UN leaders to treat world as 'single constituency'

Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi made the call while addressing the United Nations.

He told the General Assembly that climate change was the over-riding policy preoccupation of his government.

Tuilaepa said it was a societal problem requiring a decisive response from the global community.

He called on leaders to treat the planet as a single constituency and act now to save it.

Tuilaepa alluded to the short term views of certain leaders acting in their own political self-interest rather than addressing the greatest threat to the planet.
