Hurricane Harvey barrels into Texas

Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a category-4 storm but CNN report it has since been downgraded to category 1.

The storm has brought down trees in Corpus Christi, with cities from northern Mexico to Louisiana bracing for flooding.

The town of Rockport appeared to be one of the hardest hit and the mayor told not leaving town should write their names on their arms for identification in case of death or injury.

Hurricane Harvey's high winds make landfall in Texas

The storm, which has even stronger gusts, is expected to be the worst to hit Texas for 12 years. Up to a 40in (1m) of rain is expected to fall.

President Trump has signed a disaster proclamation for the state, which will free up federal aid for the worst-affected areas.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has warned of record flooding in multiple regions.

The category four storm has already brought down trees in Corpus Christi and thousands of residents have boarded up their homes and fled.

The cause of Wednesday's crash was not immediately known.

The accident happened just after 12:00 local time (17:00 GMT) as the church members were returning from a camp retreat.

Texas Governor Greg Abbot expressed "deepest condolences to the victims and the families of those involved in today's tragic event".

Student shoots another then kills herself, sheriff says

In the confusion that followed, numerous law enforcement officers rushed to the scene and a US marshal accidentally shot a Homeland Security agent, Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson said.

Dodson said the agent was in stable condition; he didn't release the condition of the wounded student. Her injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening.

Dodson said the student who died moved about six months ago to Alpine, a community of about 6,500 people roughly 200 miles southeast of El Paso. Dodson didn't identify her or provide a motive but said her family is cooperating.

No survivors in hot air balloon crash

The balloon may have struck power lines when it went down around 7:30 a.m. in pastureland near Lockhart, about 30 miles south of Austin, in an area often used for balloon landings, a county judge and public safety source told CNN.

"First I heard a whoosh," Margaret Wylie, who lives near the crash site, told CNN affiliate TWC. "And then a big ball of fire (went) up. I'd say it got as high up as those lower electric lines."

If investigators confirm 16 people died, the crash will be the most fatal hot air balloon accident in United States history.

The girl, from a Hispanic family, was diagnosed in Houston, Texas, by Dr Michael Yafi, a paediatric endocrinologist with the University of Texas. In a written presentation to the European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference in Stockholm, Yafi said she had been brought to his clinic because she was obese.

The girl weighed 35kg (5st 7lbs), putting her in the heaviest 5% of children her age. She was also in the top 5% for height and body mass index (BMI), a measure of obesity.

Brother of athlete questions why he was killed by police

He is puzzled by security footage showing the unarmed 19-year-old breaking into a car and crashing his vehicle into the glass showroom wall.

The confrontation with officers that resulted in Christian Taylor's death early Friday wasn't captured on video because the showroom in Arlington has no interior surveillance cameras and the city's police officers don't wear body cameras.
