Tiger Woods puts season on hold after having back surgery for fifth time

The 15-time major winner last played at the PNC Championship in December, where he felt "discomfort" in his back.

A statement on his social media channels said he has had a "procedure to remove a pressurised disc fragment that was pinching his nerve".

Doctors said the surgery was successful but Woods, 45, will miss a number of PGA Tour events.

"I look forward to begin training and am focused on getting back out on Tour," he said.

Woods, Manning win charity match

Woods, a 15-times major champion, and two-time Super Bowl winner Manning jumped out to a three-hole lead on the front nine at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound.

While Woods's booming drives and Manning's solid putting saw the pair dominate the early holes, five-times major winner Mickelson and Brady won the 11th and 14th to shave the lead to one.

However, they were unable to force extra holes after Woods delivered a dagger putt on 18 as darkness descended on his home course.

Tiger puts his green jacket up for grabs

The Masters, which Woods won in magical fashion for a fifth time a year ago to claim his first major since 2008, has been postponed until November because of the coronavirus pandemic which has shut down world sport on an unprecedented scale.

Like his rivals, Woods, 44, has been kicking his heels at home, waiting for the day the PGA Tour can restart.

While he has enjoyed the family time, including 2,000-piece jigsaw puzzles and cup cakes, Woods admits being "wired" to play but not preparing for Augusta's first tee has been difficult.

Woods wins record-tying 82nd PGA event

It was not exactly smooth sailing for Woods, but in the end his closing three-under-par 67 was enough to hold off a challenge from local hope Hideki Matsuyama at Narashino Country Club in the first PGA Tour event played in Japan.

Woods, who had to play seven holes on Monday in the weather-affected event, finished at 19-under 261 in his first tournament since undergoing arthroscopic left knee surgery two months ago.

Snead was 52 years old when he recorded his final tour victory in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1965 - nine years older than Woods' current age.

Tiger Woods admits Masters win 'took a lot out of me'

Golf's biggest star ended an 11-year wait for his 15th major title by winning a fifth green jacket in April.

It was a mightily impressive achievement by the 43-year-old, whose well-documented injury struggles left many doubting whether he would win another major.

Since triumphing at the Masters, Woods missed the cut at the US PGA Championship and placed 21st at the U.S. Open either side of a top-10 finish at the Memorial Tournament, and he says the demanding nature of Augusta left its mark.

After tough US Open, Tiger Woods likely won't play again until the British Open

But he played his final 12 holes at 6 under par, rallying into a tie for 21st (his 69 was his best final round at the US Open in 10 years).

It was a better showing than his missed cut at the PGA Championship, obviously, but still a far cry from his Masters championship and a further sign that Woods simply isn't going to dominate the game as he did earlier this century.

He's seemingly not going to be playing as much, either.

"I think I'm going to take a little bit of time off and enjoy some family time," Woods told reporters after his final round.

Nicklaus tips Woods for 16th major

Golf's third major of the year begins at Pebble Beach on Thursday, with Woods among the top contenders after winning the Masters in April, ending an 11-year major drought to claim his 15th.

Victory for the 43-year-old would see him tie Nicklaus and three other players on a record four U.S. Open crowns.

He is now only three overall majors adrift of Nicklaus, who thinks the gap could become two at the venue where Woods won the same tournament by 15 strokes back in 2000.

Woods impresses at Memorial

Woods – who started at the 10th with Justin Rose and Bryson DeChambeau – recorded his first birdie of the day at the 11th hole with a manageable up-and-down.

He could not get into his stride, though, and he gave that stroke back two holes later when he sent his second shot into a bunker and failed to convert another chipped putt.

Woods hit a string of pars to turn onto the front nine, but in the final four-hole stretch, he came up with the goods.

Woods breaks into world top five

The 15-time major champion was not involved at the Charles Schwab Challenge over the weekend, but still managed to climb a spot above Justin Thomas.

Woods last played in the US PGA Championship where he missed the cut at Bethpage Black, but his rise is due in part to Thomas not playing the Masters, where the 43-year-old ended an 11-year wait for a major title.

This weekend, Woods is scheduled to play at the Memorial Tournament as part of his build-up to next month's U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

Nicklaus congratulates Tiger Woods

Woods, who has struggled with injuries in recent years, was awarded the medal by United States president Donald Trump after he shockingly took home the 2019 Masters title.

It was Woods' 15th major win but his first since 2008.

"Heartfelt congrats to [Tiger Woods] on receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom this evening!" Nicklaus wrote on Twitter.
