World Rugby Sevens series

Australia, NZ miss out on World Sevens Series event due to Covid-19

The 2022 schedule was announced on Tuesday with the series to kick off with a pair of men’s and women’s rounds in Dubai starting in November.

But while Hong Kong returns as a stop, Sydney and Hamilton (New Zealand) have missed out because of its stringent pandemic protocols.

Instead, Spain will play host for the first time with men’s and women’s events scheduled in Malaga and Seville from January 21-23 and January 28-30.

Toulouse in France will also welcome teams in May next year.

Fiji lost to Samoa in pool play before back to back defeats against Scotland and the United States.

Head coach Gareth Baber said they let themselves down.

"We felt we didn't play to the performance standards that we set previously. We wanted to make up for some of that but what was good about Paris was the introduction of four new faces as well,"he said.

Samoa target World Cup qualification

Action at Twickenham Stadium is due to begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday (May 21).

The final spot at the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco in the US will go to either the Samoans or Russia, with the Pacific islanders 21 points ahead of their rivals.

Russia can draw level but would need to win the tournament to gain 22 series points, which would be their first ever victory.

New Zealand, England, Fiji, Kenya, South Africa, Wales, Australia, and France as well as the hosts have already qualified.
