Police report reveals multiple schools involved in brawls

Police in Samoa have arrested 22 students in relation to brawls in the past two weeks.

Sixteen of them arrested on 28 April have been charged and will appear in court to stand trial on 17 May.

The charges are disorderly conduct, public disturbance, and fighting on public vehicles.

Police Spokesperson Superintendent, Sua Muliaga Tiumalu says their riot operation has been active and it included a search of Malua fou College for weapons.

"The situation has been handled by police with drastic measures. We visited the schools and did searches and that’s where some of the arrests came from," he adds.

Nine of the students are from Avele College and three from Malua fou College.

Two more students are from Pesega College and one from Chanel and a 19-year-old student of USP.

Another student from MFC, a 16-year-old juvenile was apprehended on Monday and charged with armed with dangerous weapons.

"An additional five Students from ACOPA between the ages of 17 to 19 are held for trial on the 17 May, with charge of conspiracy to commit a crime - party to the offense," says Sua.

With the charges they face, the students are looking at a minimum sentence of 7 years in prison. This is only for the charge of conspiracy to commit an offense.

Police are also investigating whether teachers were involved after reports surfaced suggesting teachers were a part of the spectacle.

They may be liable to accessory before the fight.

Police Investigations continue.

"As a parent, my opinion is since there is no more corporal punishment things have gotten worse. But if there was a limit to discipline, maybe this would be resolved," concluded Sua.
