Samoa 7s captain suspended for another two weeks

Samoa sevens captain Alatasi Tupou has been suspended for a further two weeks by the Samoa Rugby Union and will undergo counselling after being charged with drink driving last month.

The 30-year-old met with the SRU High Performance Unit Integrity Committee at the weekend, after being sent home from the World Series tournament in London.

The two test Manu Samoa international was found to have breached his contract on the evening of May 26, prior to the Manu sevens team's departure for the UK.

The committee has suspended Tupou from all playing for two weeks, on top of him being stood down from the World Series tournaments in London and Paris.

He will also undergo counselling as part of his rehabilitation.

"SRU is in full support of Alatasi as he deals with the disappointment of the country due to his actions," the Union said.

"Alatasi has been a devoted servant of Samoa Rugby for over a decade and the SRU recognises his strong contribution. The committee believes that there is genuine remorse for his actions."

Pacific Rugby Players CEO Aayden Clarke said Tupou will be offered support.

"He is very disappointed to have let down SRU, his team mates and his family," he said.

"Alatasi acknowledges that he made a poor judgment error and accepts that as a leader not only in the team but in the community he needs to set a better example."

Alatasi Tupou is scheduled to appear in court on June 19.
