Electronic voting

Samoa electronic voting plan welcomed by locals

A voter's fingerprint will be scanned and registered digitally, with the information to accompany the voter's choice of candidate on polling day.

RNZ Pacific reports in the past votes from rural areas like the island of Savaii had to be delivered by ferry to Upolu.

The new system would solve major delays on polling day.

The new electronic voting system is coming from South Korea at a cost of $US2.28 million.

Samoa to introduce electronic voting next election

The electoral commissioner, Faimalōmatumua Mathew Lemisio told Talamua Online the new voting system would solve the delays in obtaining preliminary election results on polling day.

He said a voter's fingerprint will be scanned and registered digitally and that information will accompany the voter's choice of candidate on polling day.

The electoral commissioner said as well as the new technology, for more traditional voters, the old paper and pen voting system will still be available.

Turnbull,Shorten back electronic voting as Coalition claims victory

The calls for electronic voting follow a gruelling eight-day vote count, which is yet to deliver a formal result.

The Coalition is on track to win at least 74 seats, and is confident it can win two more, giving it enough seats to govern in its own right.

Mr Shorten this afternoon conceded defeat in a phone call to Mr Shorten, offering to work with Mr Turnbull to find "common ground" and make the parliament work.
