Manusina Samoa creates upset at the Oceania Women’s Rugby Championship

Fijiana lost the championship for the first time since 2019.

Cassie Siataga was Samoa's star, kicking the winning penalty on full-time and scoring all of her side's 19 points.

That win also gave Samoa the right to play in the Women's World XV Tier 2 competition later this year while Fiji will compete in WXV 3.

"Honestly, I'm really speechless," Manusina captain Sui Pauaraisa said at the post-match media conference.

"We knew that we were the underdogs, we knew we had nothing to lose.

Tonga A meets Manusina Samoa in Auckland in the curtain raiser before Moana Pasifika's home game against the Melbourne Rebels in the culture-themed round 10 of the Super Rugby Pacific competition at Mt Smart Stadium.

RNZ Pacific reports the invitational game will used by both sides for selection of their final teams to play in the Oceania Rugby Women's Championship planned for May.

Tonga A women's team manager Ilaisaane Manukalo Vaihu said Saturday's clash should become a permanent fixture between the two sides.

Manusina feeling focussed for Tonga clash

The squad assembled for their second camp on Sunday, after holding a three-day trial camp in Taranaki last month.

Tomokino said that building team camaraderie early on had helped the squad focus more on their game plan this weekend.

"We're quite pleased with the outcome of the camp and what we want to achieve there," he explained.

"So we just put together the bones of what we wanted to start with and it's been useful because we've hit the ground running here, so I know this is day three but after day one it already felt like it's been a week with the girls."

Manusina keeping an eye on World Cup decider

Just seven players have been retained in the starting 15 following Friday's 26-7 defeat by Fiji.

Captain Nina Foaese is being rested after suffering an eye injury in while lock Jacinta Ausai has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a knee injury.

Coach Ramsey Tomokino said the Manusina started strongly against Fiji but made too many errors in the second half and went away from their gameplan.

Manusina rugby coach laments player availability

Ten new caps have been selected in the 28-strong Manusina squad, which will contest the Oceania Championship in Lautoka from next week.

Samoa will be vying with Tonga, Papua New Guinea and hosts Fiji for top spot in the regional qualifier, with the winner earning a place at the 2021 World Cup in New Zealand, while the beaten finalist will advance to a final repechage event.

Coach Ramsey Tomokino wanted a more settled squad but said for various reasons, including unavailability and injury, that wasn't possible.
