Samoa's new Head of State takes oath of office

Tuimaleali'ifano succeeds Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Ta'isi Efi, who has completed ten years in office as Head of State.

The outgoing head of state of Samoa said it has been a privilege to serve his country and people.

RNZI reports in his farewell speech Tui Atua gave special thanks to the Prime Minister, Cabinet and Parliament.

He also paid tribute to the many people who helped make his and wife's Masiofo Filifilia's journey as Head of State a privilege that they can never repay or forget.

Inauguration ceremony for Samoa’s new Head of State

The Legislative Assembly approved the Notice from the Party to the Government to appoint Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II to the office of the Head of State in its sitting on the 5th July 2017. 

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Afioga Leaupepe Toleafoa Tamaaiono Faafisi will issue the Warrant of Appointment for the new Head of State elect prior to the date assigned for the inauguration.

A statement said the outgoing current Head of State Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, has served in the position for 10 years.

New head of state for Samoa

Parliament speaker, Toleafoa Apulu Faafisi, made the announcement in parliament this morning.

RNZI reports the ruling HRPP party met last night and voted for the next head of state as required by the constitution.

Tuimalealiifano, one of the longest serving member of the Council of Deputies, is a lawyer by profession and a former police inspector.

He replaces Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi who held the position for two five-year terms.
