Samoa dent New Zealand’s series’ hopes with second plate of season

New Zealand have dropped to third in the standings.

First a brilliant weaving run from Belgium Tuatagaloa accounted for the first try before Tila Mealoi intercepted a stray pass to race 40 metres and send the Samoans into raptures. It was Mealoi's second in the match, having also scored two in their semi-final win over France.

Injuries hit NZ 7s side

RNZI reports Pita Ahki, Sam Dickson and Tim Mikkelson, and Lewis Ormond have all been ruled out with injuries following the Hong Kong sevens while DJ Forbes is also returning home as part of his plan to put him in the best shape for Olympic selection later this year.

Antonio Kiri Kiri, Josh van Leishout and Isaac Te Aute will fly to Singapore tonight as cover.

Japan handed chance to impress on world series

The reigning Asian Games champions, who secured an automatic berth for the 2016 Rio Olympics by winning the Asia Rugby Sevens Qualifier in Hong Kong in November, joins the 15 core teams -  Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa and Wales – on the World Rugby Sevens Series circuit which stops over in Singapore on 16/17 April.
