AFP and Samoa Police strengthen partnership

About $41,500 tala worth of equipment were donated to the Samoan police by the Australian Federal Police, to assist with operations within the country.

The donation includes six police detailed bikes, 12 video cameras police caps and spare parts.

"I would like to thank the Australian Federal Police for their continued support of the Samoan Police," said Commissioner Egon Keil during the presentation ceremony.

"We would not have been able to fund a lot of projects if it were not for AFP, as a matter of fact, they will be funding and providing other vital projects early this year such as the case management system that costs about $300,000 tala."

The Samoan Police's bike detail has been established since 2013, and with the addition of six bicycles from this donation, the fleet has been improved to 18 bikes to patrol the city area.

Twelve high definition video cameras were included in the donation, something the commissioner was excited to introduce, as he believes they would make documenting crime scene investigations much more convenient.

AFP's rep Peter Timson says it’s a goal for the partnership to uphold and improve the standards of policing in Samoa as well as the region.

"We hope to as well strengthen our partnership through this donation, as AFP is pushing higher standards of police work," he said.

The Australian Federal Police has been involved in other projects in Samoa as well, including the establishment of the Domestic Violence network under the Samoan Police.

The special department has been equipped with the task to monitor and respond to domestic violence cases reported to the police.
