Alleged voter forgeries of concern in Samoa

Samoa's electoral office has discovered several discrepancies and cases of alleged forgery in the electoral rolls.

Sixty people were found to have been registered without meeting the required criteria.

Among the cases is that of a village mayor or pulenuu who is alleged to have declared the eligibility of four voters in different constituencies using one birth certificate.

The acting Electoral Commissioner, Faimalomatumua Mathew Lemisio, says ten cases have been referred to the police for investigation and possible criminal charges.

"The intention is to actually raise awareness and hopefully to deter members of the public who still have that intention to engage in that sort of practice under the electoral processes."
