Bus crash survivor had bad feeling prior to accident

A survivor of a horrific bus accident that occurred at Tiavi in Samoa last Friday says it was a terrifying experience.

The accident claimed the life of one of the passengers and injured several others.

Helen Sola, who is a student at National University of Samoa, was travelling home on the 3pm bus.

Sola says she had a gut feeling there was going to be an accident as she sat in the bus.

“I kind of had it in mind what was about to happen, because we were going down this hill and the bus was going way too fast. It lost control and to everyone’s surprise, there was another bus ahead of us that stopped at a house just ahead,” Sola told Loop Samoa in a phone interview from her hospital bed.

“The bus I was in tried to overtake the bus in front of us around the corner and as we were overtaking the bus ahead, we were right at the edge of the road. The bus was going too fast to make a quick turn.

“The driver just lost it and that’s when everything just happened so quickly,” she said.

Sola described her survival as a miracle saying it was the hand of God that led to her and other passengers being pulled out of the crash.

Police confirmed one of the passengers died at Motootua Hospital on Sunday evening.

Sola says she wasn’t supposed to be on the bus as her family had planned to pick her up after her classes.

“Things didn’t go as planned and I had to take the bus. The majority of the passengers were teenagers and a few were elders, I can’t give an exact number of how many school kids were on that bus,” she said.

Police are investigating the accident.
