China provides assistance for police academy

The Government of Samoa has received 100 million yuan in assistance from the Government of the People's Republic of China to help develop a police academy.

The academy will be stationed in Tafaigata.

"We are trying to raise the standard of policing in the country, and eliminate the issue of suddenly becoming a police officer without proper training," said Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

"This is a grant not a loan.”

"This is where preparation is going to, to prepare the building of this new academy," he said.

PM Tuilaepa said the academy will be placed away from the new planned prison compound in Tanumalala.

"The reason the prison is put far away is because there is that feeling you are not comfortable living in town or an area while knowing there is a prisons compound close to you," he said.

The grant is equivalent to more than US$15 million.
