Court appearance for senior bank employee over disappearance of $125,000 tala

Police have charged a 27 year old employee of Samoa Commercial Bank in connection to the alleged disappearance of $125,000 tala.

Police spokesperson Su’a Le Mamea Tiumalu says the suspect was brought into custody for questioning and released.

“The alleged money loss happened within a month. There are multiple suspects however, the main suspect is one of the senior employees at the bank,” said Su’a.

”The suspect will stand trial on August 22, but will be signing in to the central police station every Friday,” he added.

Su’a says police believe there are other suspects.

The bank had reported the missing money to Police.

“Right now, this female suspect is in custody, and with our current information in hand, we cannot directly say that she is guilty because by the law everyone is presumed innocent until proven otherwise by the court of law,” said Su’a.

“We cannot disclose whether it was a teller or a supervisor, but all we can say is that this person is a senior employee within Samoa Commercial Bank,” said Su’a.

The maximum penalty for theft as a servant is ten years in prison.
