Digicel backs Samoa Youth Alive event

An initiative aimed at fostering and re-sparking Christian fellowship amongst youth has received a boost from longtime supporter, Digicel Samoa.

The company presented a cheque of T$10,000 to the committee of Samoa Youth Alive to organise the event.

Youth Pastor Siagigi Vaafusuaga said the initiative is mainly focused on preaching God's word in a modern fashion, through youth entertainment, in this case dancing.

"Our job is to preach that word, and the rest is up to the person or youth to accept or not, that’s the key to all this, for the youth to hear and accept," he added.

Hip hop is modern culture and it is being seen as one of the best ways of tapping into the lives of young people.

This is why Samoa Youth Alive was created to preach the gospel in a much easier way that would allow youth to participate while doing what they love most and that is dancing.

Recent unwarranted events in Apia such as students being involved in brawls in the streets are of concern.

Pastor Vaafusuaga said it is a pity if Samoa Youth Alive cannot continue for an entire year.

"Our job is to give them the word, what the youth does outside of Samoa Youth Alive is entirely their decision and that’s the fact," he added.

"If only SYA went throughout the entire year, how effective it would be in those types of situations," he added.

The competition will begin next week in Savaii and is likely to be completed by July.
