Digicel Fiji is partnering in a project to lay submarine cables connecting from Samoa to Fiji.
The Chairman of Digicel Group Mr. Denis O’Brien revealed this during a press conference in Suva yesterday afternoon.
“We are investing in a new submarine cable from Samoa to Fiji as well as part of our regional connectivity build up as well.”
“It’s very advanced at the moment, it should be here by August of 2017. So it’s a very advanced project and it’s our belief that Fiji as a country is a place to invest. We are actually a partner now in building this submarine cable into Fiji so it’s all about our commitment to our investment here in Fiji.”
Mr. O’Brien said the total cost of the project is yet to be made public.
Chief Executive Officer of Digicel Fiji Mr. Darren McLean said the project will open up a branch in Vanua Levu.
“A submarine cable connecting Fiji to Samoa with the possibility of a branch out to Vanua Levu.”
“This is for general connectivity for all types of data traffic into Fiji. It’s a fibre optic cable which runs under the water.”
A submarine communications cable is a cable laid on the sea bed between land-based stations to carry telecommunication signals across stretches of ocean.
In Fiji, the ‘Southern Cross Cable Network’ is currently the only one international submarine cable.
