Fake note found, police hunt for culprits

Samoa police have warned the public to be on the lookout for fake notes.

This follows the discovery of counterfeit $100 tala bill at a gas station in town.

A taxi driver reportedly used the fake note to pay for petrol and the matter was reported to police last Wednesday by the operator of the gas station.

"We have advised the country on how to identify fake money from the seal within the paper bill," said Maotaoalii Kaioneta.

"There are heavy charges against forging and counterfeiting in Samoa and were asking the public to keep an eye out for any people using these illegal bills," he continued.

Police are yet to identify the taxi.

"There are other avenues, we are also questioning the staff, and other people who had access to the cash registers," said Maotaoalii.

The report given to the police was that the taxi came and paid for petrol and drove off without the employee having any clue about whether the $100 tala bill was fake or not.
