Fijian PM congratulates Samoan PM on re-election

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has congratulated his Samoan counterpart Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi on his landslide victory in Samoa's latest general election, the Fijian government announced Wednesday.

"Dear prime minister, I take this opportunity to warmly congratulate you on the resounding confidence of the Human Rights Protection Party and your re-election as prime minister following the national elections on March 4, 2016," Bainimarama said.

The ruling Human Rights Protection Party, headed by Tuilaepa, is set to secure a landslide victory in Samoa's general election held last Friday, the Samoan government has announced.

Preliminary counts show that Tuilaepa's party has secured some 44 seats of a possible 49 in the unicameral parliament.

In his congratulatory message, Bainimarama said he looks forward to working with Tuilaepa.

"I look forward to continuing to work with you and I wish you every success during your tenure," said the Fijian prime minister.

Tuilaepa has been Samoa's prime minister since 1998.
