Government releases first draft of Apia Waterfront Development Project

The Apia Waterfront Development project that is coordinated by the Government of Samoa has entered the next phase with the release of the Draft Waterfront Plan.

During the launch yesterday evening, Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi spoke of the importance of waterfront attractions around the world.

“Waterfronts are special places across the world. They have been key features of cities throughout history and are sources of economic strength. Ours fit this mould perfectly,” he said.

Tuilaepa says the development will benefit locals as well as tourists.

“A key objective of the plan is to enhance the remaining public spaces along the waterfront for community use, which will ensure protection of green spaces, parks, reserves, streetscapes and other recreational spaces,” he added.

The entire draft plan has been mapped out in a 63-page booklet detailing the major changes to take place from the Mulinuu Peninsula all the way to Taumeasina.

The most appealing is the plan to turn the pond behind the Government building into a small playground beach.

The pond will be cleared of debris and buried with white sand.

Tuilaepa says the waterfront development will benefit the business sector.

“By improving the attractiveness, functionality and safety of our waterfront, we will create business opportunities for Samoans. We will give tourists more reasons to stay longer in Samoa as well,” he added.

Construction at the site is expected to begin in November.

However, there are some consultations that are still taking place including discussions with villagers of Sogi who are refusing to relocate.

The second phase of consultation for the project will be open until 30 September 2016.

Two public forums will be held in mid-September and further details will be provided closer to the date.
