Manu Samoa Sevens Coach to be announced this week

The Samoa Rugby Union is to soon announce a Manu Samoa Sevens Coach as it faces a tough run to qualify for the Rio Olympics after a poor performance in the last IRB Series.

Two days of intensive interviews with high profile applicants from Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa were completed last Friday.

Legendary names such as top Sevens points scorer and former English Sevens skipper Ben Collings, Sevens maestro Waisale Serevi and Samoa’s Brian Lima have been floated as some of the applicants.

The Samoa Rugby Union is in a desperate position and running out of time as the players who made the national team showed their skills in the recent Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea with a very disappointing result.

SRU’s Interim CEO, Faleomavaega Vincent Fepuleai told Talamua that an announcement should be made this week.

The SRU Board had a long meeting on Friday night and resulted in the Prime Minister who is the Union’s chairman an hour late to the launch of the Bank South Pacific at the Robert Louis Museum.

Samoa won the IRB Sevens Championship title in 2010 and has since slid backwards to 10th in the overall rankings.
