Manunu Primary School opens new creative centre

A $50,000 tala project by the US Embassy to Samoa has resulted in the opening of a creative learning centre for a primary school in Manunu.

The project is through the Regional English Language office of the embassy and caters to encouraging creative learning not just using black board and chalk, but by engaging in what they are learning.

“The aim for these centres are to provide a dynamic and vibrant space, that improves rural youths’ ability to learn English and compete academically,” said interim Charge de Affaires for the United States Embassy, Emily Armitage.

“It is our hope, that these pilot creative learning centres will set the standard for other Samoan communities to establish creative learning centres within their primary schools,” she added.

This is the first of this type of centre to be opened in Samoa, where students have the chance to apply their English learning through communication and activities.

The second will open in Gataivai, Savai’i.

“The programme is catered to by Peace Corp volunteers and Joshua Tarbox will be taking care of Manunu Primary school. These centres, will provide a wonderful opportunity for students in underserved, rural communities to thrive,” she added,

Joshua Tarbox was the active member of the Peace Corps, who along with the village of Manunu built the centre. The village thanked the US Embassy for the initiative, especially with Tarbox’s assistance, which has brought such a blessing to the villages school.
