Nauru president visits daughter in Taiwan

Nauru President Baron Waqa, who is on a six-day official trip to Taiwan, took a detour to visit his daughter, who is studying in northern Taiwan's Hsinchu City.

Waqa visited an exhibition of award-winning student inventions at Yuanpei University of Medical Technology, where his daughter Carren-Tai Waqa is studying medical laboratory science and biotechnology. He also tasted oolong tea and snacks prepared by school officials.

The Nauru president said he hasn't seen his daughter in a long time and joked that she is turning into a Taiwanese person.

Carren-Tai Waqa said she has made friends with teachers and students at Yuanpei and people treated her like family.

Waqa is visiting Taiwan for the 10th time and the third time as president of the Republic of Nauru. He met with President Ma Ying-jeou and other senior government officials a day earlier.

Nauru is one of the 22 countries that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The two countries have numerous cooperation projects, spanning agriculture, medical services, public health, clean energy, human resource development and cultural exchanges.
