Police charge Director of National Prosecution Office

Samoa’s Director of National Prosecution Office Mauga Precious Chang has been charged in relation to an alleged accident in May this year.

Police Commissioner Egon Keil has confirmed that police in the past two months have investigated a report of the alleged accident that involved three vehicles.

“Police can confirm that they have charged the Director of the National Prosecution Office. The decision to charge her is a result of a police investigation where the file was then reviewed by an independent prosecutor,” he stated.

Commissioner Keil said it was confirmed a few weeks back that charges are now likely and the matter was referred to a prosecutor for an independent review of the evidence.

He adds that has now been completed.

“No court date is set at the time. The independent prosecutor is an Auckland-based barrister named, Satiu Simativa Perese and he was engaged on advice of the Attorney General to ensure independence and he will work directly with the police,” said Keil.

No other details of the alleged accident have been released with police saying they will wait until the court case.
