Principal pushes student focus in MESC AGM

Avele College Principal Matafeo Reupena Matafeo is adamant about statements he made at a session of the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture's Annual General Meeting.

"We need to establish the right focus," he said.

"As leaders, we should not be the ones to sit and warm our comfortable chairs, we should be the first to act and must serve as a role model for your teachers," he reiterated.

A sensitive issue pertaining to education is Samoa in recent years, is bullying and violence, something Matafeo himself calls unnecessary and all starts from within schools.

"When I arrived at Avele, class leaders and captains were acknowledged with the title of 'Susuga', that is no longer used at Avele," he said.

"Giving a class captain, who is a student at most a high title, is inappropriate, because it will make the student feel like they are somehow superior to their peers," he stated.

"This in turn leads to class captains and leaders thinking they can abuse and bully the younger students, and it’s wrong," Matafeo concluded

The role of leaders has been established in Samoan Colleges for a long time, however Matafeo believes this does not make one student superior or inferior then another.

His approach and advice to principals of each respective college in Samoa for 2016, is to have a corporate plan, and thus maintaining the right focus.

It is this focus that has led to Avele College pushing its Agricultural science program, by establishing a proper farming and livestock section in the college compound.

It is this section of the college that has produced five students who are eligible to study a Bachelors of Agriculture Science at the University of the South Pacific in Alafua.

"If we leaders start leading by example, our teachers would know what we are aiming for, thus making the journey easier," he said.
