Samoa and Virgin Australia continue airline joint venture for another nine months

The joint airline venture between Samoa and Virgin Australia will continue for the next nine months through the Virgin Samoa joint venture airline.

The previous joint venture deal ends Friday 12 February 2016.

A Cabinet statement said Samoa’s deliberations and preparations for a new agreement is on-going and is also eyeing new agreements with other airlines like Qantas.

The Samoan government has been openly unhappy with the joint venture after Virgin Airlines went into partnership with Air New Zealand.

The Government has resurrected the national carrier Polynesian Airlines that has been negotiating with Solomon Air and others to have flights between Samoa, New Zealand and Australia and other markets.

Samoa has also been part of the Regional Airlinks Project spearheaded by the Air Tahiti Nui airline where representatives from the Cook Islands and Samoa were invited to the Partners Initial Meeting in Auckland, New Zealand 5 February 2016.

The discussions regarded the way forward for the airline’s Regional Airlinks Project targeting deals with big markets in the northern Pacific region
