Samoa prop Census Johnston shocks French club by playing the All Blacks

Toulouse rugby officials have expressed surprise at their prop, Census Johnston, playing for Samoa against the All Blacks, and suggested there could be consequences.

The 34-year-old retired from international rugby in April when he signed a new deal with the wealthy French club, but he has done a U-turn to turn out for Samoa in the historic test against the All Blacks in Apia.

Toulouse bosses Fabien Pelous and Ugo Mola are concerned the experienced front-rower may now be tempted to push on and play at this year's Rugby World Cup.

"We thought that Census had retired from international rugby. The fact that he is playing against the All Blacks is a bit of a surprise and unsettling," Pelous told specialist French website Rugbyrama.

"But we'll see if it's only this match or if there is a chance of him playing in the World Cup."

Mola indicated there would be repercussions.

"When you lose a key player from your squad that should be present for pre-season but is not, there will be consequences."

Toulouse plan to speak to Johnston on his return and are eager to have him available for Top 14 and European Cup action.

Johnston has played 47 tests since 2005.

The situation highlights the club versus country issue that has enveloped Pacific Island players and their lucrative deals with northern clubs. Earlier this week Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, who is also chairman of the Samoa Rugby Union, promised to keep fighting for the release of players from wealth foreign clubs.
