Samoan national jailed for raping Swedish tourist in Queensland

A Samoan national has been sentenced to nine years' jail for raping a Swedish backpacker at a hostel in southern Queensland's Wide Bay.

Ivan Galuega, 24, pleaded guilty in the Bundaberg District Court yesterday afternoon to two counts of rape, one of burglary with violence and one count of assault with intent to rape.

The court heard Galuega had been staying at the same hostel as his 20-year-old victim in June 2014 and struck up a friendship with her.

Crown prosecutor Clare Kelly said Galuega snuck into the woman's room at the Childers Hostel on her last night in the country and violently raped her.

Kelly said the victim repeatedly told Galuega to stop but he had threatened to kill her if she left the room.

The victim was left with bruises to her neck.

His defence told the court he was a talented rugby player and had come to Australia after a breakdown with his family in Samoa.

Judge Gary Long sentenced Galuega to nine years' jail.

He will be eligible for parole in 2017.
