Self-belief key to Samoa’s win in Paris

Manu Samoa sevens head coach, Damien McGrath has attributed today’s win against Fiji in the Paris sevens final to self-belief.

Samoa last won a cup in the HSBC sevens series in Dubai in 2012.

Fiji's defeat which came from the hands of the most criticized yet still rolling, Falemiga Selesele has proved that Manu Samoa's big hearts can do the job.

Loop Samoa spoke to McGrath this morning following their win against South Africa in the quarterfinal and he said there’s no fancy game plan left to discuss.

"Self-belief. The other teams, particularly the big teams are highly paid professionals with lots of Internationals and Super Rugby players," he said.

"We are boys from the villages in Samoa and amateur teams in NZ. It takes a great deal of mental strength to one out and match them," said McGrath

"We are a work in progress and each leg is another step forward. We have made Quarter Finals our aim and that is becoming a regular occurrence," he added

"Now it's our first semifinal and despite being underdogs each time, we can with self-belief beat anybody," he added.

Coach McGrath says, that things have been coming together for a while and that was always the plan.

McGrath spoke to Loop Samoa before the team took on Argentina and Fiji.

Manu Samoa sevens went on to stun the Fijians with the comeback victory and McGrath says it’s all starting to come together.

Coach McGrath was asked what’s next for Manu Sevens coming off the win in order to be consistent with their performance come London and Monaco.

He simply replied, "practice".

The man of the match Falemiga Selesele has sparked a new energy in Samoa since the start.

At 2am Monday Samoan time, not a single house was quiet as everyone was supporting the boys in blue in their semifinals match against Argentina.

The Social Media is flooded with posts in support of Selesele and his team with congratulatory messages on the well-deserved win.
