St. Mary’s College Wins Inaugural Open Girls Rugby League Tournament

St. Mary’s College defeated Papauta Girls College in the final of the inaugural Girls Open Rugby League Tournament hosted by NRL and Digicel in Samoa.

“This is the first time our school has even participated in such a tournament. No one knew that the girls would have a talent in rugby league, but we’re so glad to see they love it,” said St. Mary’s coach Ben Ulaula.

NRL Manager for Samoa, Gabrielle Apelu, says the initiative means more than just a competition for a shiny cup, but a way to encourage girls to compete in sports and reassure them that women and girls are just as welcome to play as anyone else.

“Our theme today is sister for sister in the spirit of good sportsmanship, fair play and it’s a way to encourage our women of today. They had six weeks to prepare and their hard work has paid off with their games that went on in the weekend,” she said.

“They’ve come together well as a team. We have been there to each school to assist with their coaching. The teachers love it and the schools love it,” she said.

The goal is after this year’s tournament, the following one will show a great improvement in the players. And we know that next year is the Rugby League world cup and while it is early to pick our Fetu o Samoa Stars today, it’s a good start,” she said.

The event at Lotopa was officially launched by the Australian High Commissioner, Sue Langford, who congratulated the girls and all those participating in the event, for making the initiative a reality.
