Submarine cable project to boost internet services in Samoa

The official signing has taken place between the various stakeholders for the US$49 million submarine cable project.

"This submarine internet cable is a very crucial infrastructure development for Samoa," said Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

"It will assist in boosting education, health and even environmental works. Imagine having our local doctors proceed in surgical procedures in Samoa without the need to send patients overseas. This can be made possible with the stronger internet connections.”

"It is with that type of focus that we have established this private-public partnership," said Tuilaepa.

The Ministry of Communication information Technology is spearheading the project through the three main telecommunication companies in Samoa.

Digicel, Bluesky and CSL along with UTOS, Samoa Life Assurance and National Providence Fund are working together to ensure this dream for Samoa becomes a reality.

"The target is by midyear 2017. That is next year, we would have the submarine cable reach Samoa by then and we would start works to improve the network in the country," said PM Tuilaepa.

"This means cheaper internet and bigger network connections for the entire country, especially the big island of Savai’i," he said.

The multimillion dollar project is made possible with assistance from the Asia Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Australian Government.

"The Samoan Connectivity project is an all Samoan own initiative. By Samoa for the people of Samoa," said the Prime Minister.

The improved connectivity will improve the businesses and tourism sector as well as enable and improve the access to information on health and education.
