Temporary flea market set up for vendors

The government through the Samoa Land Corporation has set up a temporary flea market within a week of a fire destroying the original complex.

"Flea market operators have been here since 1989, when the Savalalo market was officially allocated for them after the construction of the market at Fugalei," Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said during the launch.

"We have estimated up to more than $500,000 tala in the assistance given to you operators," he added.

The task was made much easier with tents that were previously set up from an international conference, which were moved to Savalalo for the stall owners to use.

Aside from the tents, operators have been granted two months to operate free of cost in the temporary market, and an allocation of one thousand tala to each stall owner.

"This is temporary, as government have already laid plans in place, but we are already looking at further development for you flea market operators as well," said Tuilaepa.

Earlier today, another assistance was solidified.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between four banks, ANZ, Samoa Commercial Bank, National of Samoa, and BSP.

They all signed an agreement with the government to open an account in their respective banks for donations from the public that will be dispensed amongst the stall owners.

The agreement is an initiative by Samoa Tourism Authority and the Samoa Hotels Association.

After 30 days of people depositing their donations into these accounts, they will be collected and divided to the more than 300 shop owners who operated at the flea market.
