Waikato and Samoa halfback Pele Cowley joins Willis Halaholo at the Cardiff Blues

Waikato and Samoa halfback Pele Cowley has signed a short-term contract with the Cardiff Blues.

Cowley, 23, finished this year's Mitre 10 Cup as Waikato's leading No 9 and started their last two matches, which were victories over Hawke's Bay (46-22) and Wellington (28-24).

Stuff reports Cardiff announced the capture of Cowley and former Wales first five-eighth Nicky Robinson on Monday (Tuesday NZ time) - the latter coming out of retirement after hanging up his boots last year.

Cowley will again team up with former Hurricanes and Waikato midfielder Willis Halaholo, who signed a three-year contract with Cardiff earlier this year.

The Welsh club is also home to former Blues and Chiefs playmaker Gareth Anscombe, as well as two-cap All Black Jarrad Hoeata, formerly of the Chiefs and Highlanders, and former Blues No 8 Nick Williams.

Cowley joins with up the squad this week after touring Europe with Samoa for their end-of-year tour, where he was an unused reserve in their first two games against France and Georgia, which both ended in 52-8 and 20-16 defeats respectively.

Cardiff halfback Lewis Jones is expected to be out injured for a while after knee surgery according to Wales Online, so Cowley will be straight in the mix for their domestic and European campaigns.

Cowley, who has won eight Samoa caps since his debut in 2014, joined Waikato from Counties Manukau for this year.

He is contracted with the Mooloos for 2017, so will likely return to New Zealand when Cardiff's season finishes in May.

Cowley played for Hamilton Old Boys in Waikato premier club rugby this year, and helped them to reach the final, which they lost 11-6 to Melville.

His Waikato debut came in their second Ranfurly Shield defence of the year, when they beat King Country 55-0 in Matamata in July.

Cowley went on to make five appearances for Waikato in the national provincial championship campaign, as he battled with Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Isaac Boss and Harrison Levien for the No 9 jersey throughout the season.
