"When you get on the rugby field, don’t leave your brain in the locker room" - PM to Sevens players

Caretaker Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi issued a stern word to sevens rugby players during the official opening of the Marist Vailima International Sevens tournament.

"Take it with you, you tend to leave it lying around somewhere else while you are in the field."

"You get thrown off easily, some of you right when you get on that field you see the opposing team and you get the shakes," he added.

Tuilaepa’s comments were directed at the lack of creativity for rugby players in the field. He criticised the non-existent playmaking sense to find quick solutions to problems in the field of play instead of sticking to the traditional run and gun strategy that continues to be showcased.

Samoa is currently ranked 10 in the HSBC sevens tournament this year, it is a little improvement said Tuilaepa following the previous rank of 15.

"For this weeks games, we will have our coaches for sevens, and the 15s squad, to monitor your play in the tournament.

"All of you, including you international players, you can try your hardest to find a spot overseas, but there are hundreds of players much better than you competing for that position as well," he said.

"So take this opportunity to do something for your country," he added.

Rugby is not the only sport under the microscope.

"Our Boxing has declined so much, from the top condition we were in the Pacific for years," Tuilaepa said.

"Let this fight tonight, be the spark of talent again to revive it, so it can continue to grow in Samoa," said Tuilaepa.

The Marist Vailima Sevens tournament will begin Friday evening while the Fight for Marist bouts will commence tonight.
