Kahu's lofty goal kicking ambition

Brisbane winger Jordan Kahu has revealed he has enlisted the help of former Queensland Reds playmaker Shane Drahm in a bid to become the NRL's best goal-kicker.

Drahm played 49 matches for the Reds in a five-year Super Rugby career before moving to England in 2001.

His time in England brought with it a number of goal kicking records, slotting over 400 conversions and penalties in his 134 matches for Bristol, Northampton and Worcester.

Now back in Australia and retired from rugby union, Drahm has begun helping one of the Broncos' best.

Given the goal kicking duty after the retirement of Corey Parker, Kahu said the extra coaching has helped him a lot – kicking five from five in Brisbane's Round 1 win over the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

"I've been working with Shane Drahm. He used to play for the Reds and he's helped me a lot," Kahu said.

"We've been getting together twice a week so it has been pretty regular. One of the staff put me through to him and he's been great.

"The body is feeling really good so I've been doing as much as I can. Goal kicking is so crucial now.

"Last year we lost a few games by a conversion or two so I want to make sure that doesn't happen this year."

The Broncos lost four games by two points or less in 2016 and it proved costly, with Wayne Bennett's men missing a top-four finish on for and against.

Then-captain Parker kicked at just 65 per cent, missing a number of crucial conversions throughout the year.

Despite having a superior goal kicking percentage of 79 per cent in that same year, Kahu was made to wait behind Parker, filling in when needed as the club's second choice goal-kicker.

Now the undisputed No.1 kicking ace at Brisbane, Kahu said he is determined to prove his worth after being made to wait for the role.

"I really like the role at the moment. Corey was there last year so I was happy to be number two, but now I'm relishing the opportunity.

"I have worked very hard over the pre-season to make sure I continually improve.

"I want to be one of the best goal-kickers in the competition so it's something I need to keep working on.

"I'm hoping if I do that I can continue to improve my goal kicking percentage."

Every point will be crucial on Friday night when the Broncos take on the North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium.

The match promises to be a classic, with the last five clashes between the two sides having been decided by six points or less.
