Kiwi wing Denny Solomona will 'go that extra mile for England'

Code-hopping Kiwi convert Denny Solomona has vowed he will "go that extra mile for the England rugby team - just seven months after admitting his "heart is not for England" in the rugby league arena.

The 23-year-old Auckland-born wing has been included in Eddie Jones' England squad only months after walking out on his rugby league contract with the Castleford Tigers to join English rugby union premiership club Sale last November.

Solomona has scored 11 tries in his first 13 matches for Manchester-based Sale after crossing the white chalk 42 times for Castleford in the last Super League season and he has been snapped by England after meeting the three-year residency requirements.

Last September Solomona indicated he was reluctant to play rugby league for England, stating: "My heart's not here, it's not for England."

"I'd love to represent Samoa while my grandparents are alive, it would mean a lot to do that, but it would be good if New Zealand came calling. I would be open to any option."

Solomona played a rugby league test for Samoa against Fiji in Apia last October, and talked about the "privilege and honour" he felt to be representing the Pacific Island nation.

"I was born in Auckland but growing up with my grandparents, all they talk about is Samoa, and I am playing on behalf of my family representing this country and myself as well," Solomona told the Samoa Observer.

However he declared his availability for the England rugby union team as soon as he fulfilled the three-year residency requirement set by World Rugby.

That led to rugby league fans branding him a "snake" on social media.

The change of heart also The Guardian newspaper to note the financial imperative - with England rugby union players paid $40,000 per test.

However, Solomona insists he is committed to the Red Rose cause.

"I am proud that I am Samoan," he told the Daily Express on Wednesday. "But I have an opportunity to play for England and that's what I am going to do.

"There's no doubt I will give 100 per cent. There's no doubt that I will go that extra mile for England."

Rugby union is not entirely new to Solomona. The 1.90cm, 94kg speedster played rugby union for the St Peter's College first XV in Auckland, winning a trophy for top tryscorer in the 2010 season.

Solomona signed for the Melbourne Storm, but broke a leg during the National Youth Cup season in 2013.

He was released by the Storm in January 2014 to join the London Broncos and switched to Castleford for the 2015-16 campaign.

Solomona had two years to go on his Castleford contract when he defected to Sale, promoting yet-to-be resolved legal action by the rugby league club.

The Sun newspaper claimed Solomona had been offered $NZ460,000 a year to play for Sale after earning $92,000 a season for Castleford.

The controversy does not appear to have affected Solomona at Sale where made his mark with a hat-trick of tries against premiership leaders Wasps in March.

Solomona's feet appear to be on the ground, judging from his comments in an interview with BBC Sport.

"The main thing is I need to come in and learn," the 23-year-old said.

"Obviously I'm still new to the game as it has changed since I played in school.

"There is Eddie Jones and the experienced players there like Mike Brown and everyone, I'm just going to keep learning."

Solomona also insists he is a team man.

"I think my biggest buzz is contributing to a win. I prefer wins than tries, they're the most important to me. If I'm contributing to that then I'm doing my job."

He found out about his England selection when he was out with his fiancee, English model and former reality TV star Jess Impiazzi.

"I was with my partner at the time and they announced it on Twitter and it just went from there - I was quite excited actually," Solomona told BBC Sport.

"My mum texted me first and said congratulations and I didn't know what she was talking about, so I checked my Twitter account."
