Japan signs SAT 266,000 grant for Samoa’s Afega Primary School

Eight new classrooms are being earmarked for construction at Samoa’s Afega Primary School following the signing of a funding grant with the Government of Japan.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, Maugaoleatuolo Shinya Aoki signed a Grant Contract for Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) with Maulolo Lino, President of Afega Primary School Committee during a ceremony today.

The Grant will assist the School Committee to also reseal the second floor of their current two-storey school building.

The school has been facing an extreme high student-teacher ratio with single classes from Year 1 to Year 8 as well as cracked cement flooring of its second floor two-storey building.

Japan’s GGP provides assistance to non-governmental organizations, primary schools, hospitals and other non-profit associations that have a direct impact on the well-being of communities.

It is hoped that upon the completion of the project, there would be two streams of classes that will significantly reduce the student-teacher ratio from an average of 64:1, 42:1 to 25:1 per class and to safeguard everyday access of the students within their existing school building.
