National University of Samoa cancels graduation due to measles epidemic

The 2019 Foundation Graduation ceremony at the National University of Samoa has been cancelled in light of the current measles epidemic.

The university’s Management and Council has also postponed the 2019 TVET Graduation ceremony to April 2020.

According to the university, a couple of students who contracted measles and came to the campus were immediately sent home.

All successful Foundation students will be informed in the next few weeks on how to collect their Foundation Certificates.

In addition, all Foundation students who have already paid their application fee to graduate will be given a full refund.

Successful TVET students will pay their application fee to graduate next year.

The Management & Council said it fully understands the importance and cultural significance of these ceremonies in the celebration of the academic achievements of NUS graduates.

“However, given the seriousness of the current measles health crisis, taking precautionary measures to contain the spread of measles which ultimately save lives is the responsible thing to do.

The Management and Council said it also wished to reassure parents and students that this decision focuses only on the graduation ceremonies and does not affect in anyway the normal process for results approval and results ranking for scholarship purposes.
