Australia interested in 2022 Commonwealth Games

Not content with just the 2018 event on the Gold Coast, Australia could look to hoover up more Commonwealth Games bids for 2022 as well as 2030.

David Grevemberg, CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation, has confirmed Australia is one of four nations interested in hosting the 2022 event, which was recently made available after Durban was stripped of its right to stage the event.

It comes as western Sydney emerges as a challenger for country Victoria's bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Australia, along with Canada, Malaysia and the UK have submitted expressions of interest in hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"This is the first step in a collaborative process that will see a clear and detailed set of criteria applied to any Games hosting ambitions," Mr Grevemberg said.

"The process has been streamlined to be as agile as possible given the time available and to minimise costs for potential hosts, whilst maintaining the transformative ambitions of the Commonwealth sports movement.

"An expert CGF review team will work with each country in the evaluation of proposals of potential host cities.

"Based on the number of interested parties it is not expected that the process will finally conclude until early (European) autumn."

The Gold Coast will host the 2018 Games.

NSW challenges Victoria for 2030 bid

Meanwhile, a stoush could be brewing between NSW and Victoria over who will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Just weeks after 11 regional Victorian towns floated a potential bid for the 2030 event, western Sydney has made a push to host either the 2026 or 2030 Games.

The Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue (WSLD) made its audacious pitch at the Out There Summit in Parramatta on Friday.

"We don't think regional Victoria has nearly the appeal that this region presents and would cost taxpayers much more money," WSLD chairman Christopher Brown said.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said if the case for a western Sydney games stacked up, she would "definitely" consider it.

With a decision on host cities for 2026 and 2030 several years away, Commonwealth Games Australia is yet to consult with the potential bidding teams.

However, CGA executive officer Craig Phillips said he was "thrilled" to see such enthusiasm.

The city of Shepparton is heading the bid by 11 regional Victorian towns, including Geelong and Ballarat, to host the 2030 Games.
