Maria Tutaia shoots Silver Ferns to victory over England in Quad Series

An injury-free Maria Tutaia starred in the shooting end as the Silver Ferns crushed England 61-37 on Friday [NZ time].

Tutaia landed 32/37 in a dominant New Zealand performance at Liverpool's Echo Arena, shooting 21 goals in the first half alone.

The 106-cap veteran was restricted to just two tests for New Zealand last year due to a bruised cuboid bone in her right foot, which put her in a moon boot for two months and on crutches.

Tutaia told Stuff last month, she felt in the best condition she had in several years and it is clearly evident in her netball.

It was a vastly improved effort from the Silver Ferns in all areas of their play after a poor 57-50 loss to Australia in the Quad Series opener in Durban on Sunday.

Silver Ferns' coach Janine Southby was impressed with the way her side bounced back and praised the way they stepped up defensively.

"Reasonably pleased. As a coach, you're always looking for ways to improve. There's certainly some lapses we had and poor execution at times.

"Generally, the intensity and ball speed we played with on attack was pretty good most of the match. On defence, everyone put their heart and soul into it. We created the gains we didn't against Australia."

Leading by three goals [16-13] after the first quarter, the Silver Ferns took control of the contest.

Sparked by Tutaia's accurate long range shooting and some slick ball into the attacking end, New Zealand scored nine unanswered goals to build a 25-13 advantage.

England squandered ball away in the second term as the Silver Ferns produced swarming defence and caused the Roses to panic.

New Zealand lost goal shoot Bailey Mes to a back injury in the second quarter with Te Paea Selby-Rickit replacing her in the attack end. She impressed, shooting 20/21 against England's experienced defensive end.

England were outscored 15-6 in the term as New Zealand built a deserved 31-19 buffer by the halftime break.

Tutaia could do little wrong in the first half, landing 21/24. She caused the English defence problems with her accuracy from deep in the circle.

On the few occasions, Tutaia did miss, Mes was on hand to secure the rebound and allow the Silver Ferns to profit.

Southby switched around her starting line-up moving Anna Harrison into wing defence in place of Sam Sinclair, while Jane Watson came into the defensive end.

The Silver Ferns spoke about the need to start strongly after a poor first quarter against Australia.

They produced plenty of intensity to begin the match, racing out to a 8-1 lead with Tutaia draining several long bombs. There was a noticeable lift in the defensive pressure through the court from the Silver Ferns, which forced England into early mistakes.

England eventually got into their rhythm and closed New Zealand's lead to 16-13 by the end of the term.

Southern Steel midcourter Gina Crampton gained her third cap, replacing Grace Rasmussen at wing attack to start the second half.

England looked a more composed outfit to start the second half, but every time they went on a mini-run, the Silver Ferns hit back at the other end of the court.

There was no let up in the last quarter from the Silver Ferns as the lead grew out to 25 goals.

New Zealand made further changes in the final quarter with Sinclair injected off the bench into wing defence.

Young Taranaki defender Kelly Jury made her international debut replacing skipper Katrina Grant with seven minutes remaining.

New Zealand's final match in the Quad Series is against South Africa in London on Monday [NZ time]. They finish their tour with two tests against Wales in Cardiff over February 8-9.
