An NFL-style combine set to re-start Australia's new domestic competition

It’s been almost two months since professional rugby was last played in Australia when Super Rugby was suspended due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but a revised domestic competition is scheduled to get back underway on July 4.

Senior players within Australia want to introduce a new concept a week before the new competition’s start date in a move that could give rugby a surge of interest in a country where engagement in the sport has been badly waning in recent times.

NFL extends deal to play in Mexico

The league and the Mexico Ministry of Tourism have announced an agreement to play three regular-season games from 2019 to 2021.

News of the deal came ahead of Sunday's huge matchup between the Oakland Raiders and defending champions the New England Patriots at Estadio Azteca.

That clash is the second of a current three-year Mexico deal that is set to expire after next season. The league has yet to announce which teams will make the trip in 2018.

NFL launches new $100 million concussion initiative

Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote a letter on playsmartplaysafe.com stating that the new program will attempt to "drive progress in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of head injuries, enhance medical protocols and further improve the way the game is taught and played by all who love it."

"The NFL has been a leader on health and safety in many ways, and we've made some real strides in recent years," Goodell wrote. "But when it comes to addressing head injuries in our game, I'm not satisfied, and neither are the owners of the NFL's 32 clubs. We can and will do better."

Hayne praised by San Francisco 49ers coach

Kelly also doused speculation the 49ers were planning to cut Hayne, which led to the Australian making a face-saving exit.

The 49ers instead were bullish on Hayne, praising his ability to pick up Kelly's new offence and excited about using his powerful, 188cm body and skills.

"He's a really sharp learner," Kelly told reporters on Tuesday at the 49ers' Santa Clara facility.

"We were excited. He's a big body and has a skill set."
