16 year jail sentence for Samoa rapist

Gasologa Matamua of Salelologa had committed the crimes at his home.

Meanwhile in the Supreme Court last Friday a teacher was sentenced to 13 years jail after he was found guilty of one count of rape and five counts of sexual connection with a girl under 16.

The 39-year-old defendant, Efeso Pati Masina, was teaching at a church primary school when the offences occurred.

This week the court will sentence a former church minister who had admitted charges of rape and incest.

Traditional Samoan tattooing shines at NZ festival

Tatau, the practice of hand-tapping ink into the body, was on show at the New Zealand Tattoo and Art Festival.

Tattooist Su'a Fuiavailili Lawrence Ah Ching returned from England for the festival where he demonstrated the traditional practice.

Su'a said conventions are an opportunity for him to share an element of his Samoan culture.

"We are tattooing in the world of tattooing, internationally. For me it's sort of like sharing cultures. That's what we've been doing in Europe and around the globe as well," he said.

Hartley set to lead England at Six Nations despite Samoa omission

It marks the first time Hartley has been dropped by Jones, but the Australian insisted that, as long as his disciplinary record remains clean with Northampton Saints beforehand, the 31-year-old will lead England in their bid for a third successive Six Nations title.

But against Samoa, George Ford and Chris Robshaw will serve as co-captains, with England hoping to claim their 200th win at Twickenham on Saturday.

"We want to test our ability, if Dylan's not available, to put a team on the field and have leadership density," Jones said.

Samoa captain adamant team never wanted handouts

England prop Mako Vunipola had suggested giving a portion of their £22,000 individual fee towards Samoa’s players, who will earn £650 from the game at Twickenham. The idea initially received widespread support within the squad, however the senior player group decided that a donation could have inflamed a delicate stand-off between the Samoa Rugby Union and World Rugby.

Father of six jailed for 15 years for rape in Samoa

The girls were aged 14 and 15 years when he committed the crimes between July 2015 and December last year.

The married father of six was convicted of 13 sex crimes.

The Samoa Observer reports Supreme Court Justice Tafaoimalo Leilani Tuala-Warren said, in sentencing, that a breach of trust is unacceptable and the Court will take a tough stand against this kind of offending in an effort to eradicate it.

Justice Tuala-Warren said Vitale is married to the victim's older sister and instead of protecting them he took advantage of his position.

Samoan police make passport forgery arrest

But police said more charges could be laid as their investigations continue.

The accused name has been withheld until he appears in court.

Due to the sensitivity of the case, the police said they would not provide any further comment while the court case is pending.

The Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, who is also the Immigration Minister, said there would always be those who try to cheat the system but the message was clear that offenders would be punished.

Worries in Samoa about illegal use of anti-biotics

Tuitama Dr Talalelei Tuitama said there was concern that patients are not seeing a medical doctor but are using connections with family and friends to get the drugs.

Talamua News Service reported the warning came after a steady increase in the number of micro-organisms or bacteria that are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

The minister said the practice of using other patients prescribed medication was a major concern, as it meant the patient given the prescription did not complete their given dosage.

Samoa minister likely to face assault charges

The Samoa Observer reported that a relative of the minister lodged the complaint following an incident last weekend in which the minister allegedly assaulted another member of her family.

The minister was reported as saying the incident had nothing to do with her ministerial duties and therefore she would not comment.

A Police source told the newspaper a formal complaint had been laid on Monday but the minister had not yet been charged.

The minister is one of five female parliamentarians and a former broadcaster who was also a director of the state owned Radio 2AP.

Samoa joins fight against negative propaganda against coconuts

Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Lopaoo Natanielu Mu’a, signed the Accord on behalf of the Government.

The principal objective of the Tarawa Accord is to promote the health and nutritional attributes of coconut products.

The negative propaganda emerged from an American Heart Association (AHA) release in April this year on the Presidential Advisory on Cardiovascular Disease and Saturated Fats.

This statement singled out coconut oil as not recommended for consumption due to its potential increase towards risk of heart disease.

England players decide against donating portion of match fee to Samoa

Mako Vunipola, the Saracens prop who comes from a Tongan family, had proposed donating at least £1,000 per player earlier this month and it was understood at the time that there was near universal agreement within the squad to do so.

Samoa's players only receive a £650 match fee in contrast and a widespread appeal has been launched - #HELPSAMOA - to help offset financial problems within the Samoan union which declared itself bankrupt only a few weeks ago.
