Fiso impresses as captain

The 18-year-old has been guiding Samoa through their challenging campaign at the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship in Auckland, New Zealand, and although their opponents have provided some difficult assignments, Fiso has been enjoying every minute.

“This is a huge opportunity for me,” she said.

“I’m representing our country and I know that there are heaps of girls back home in Samoa that really wanted this opportunity.

Fears about magnitude of family violence confirmed in Samoa

Maiava Iulai Toma said he was pleased with consultations with stakeholders from all sectors but most importantly with the Samoan public.

He said phase one of the inquiry was completed in May with 17 consultations encompassing families and villages across Samoa.

RNZI reports Maiava said during the consultations he came to realise that traditional institutions, such as the matai system, which is influential in regulating behaviour in villages, should be engaged.

Ambassador of Poland presents credentials to Samoa’s Head of State

The credential ceremony was held at the Head of State's residence at Tuaefu yesterday.

In his welcoming address, His Highness touched on the closer friendship and cooperation between Samoa and Poland.

"Samoa is thankful for the assistance from Poland through its contribution in the European Development Fund for the Pacific region," said His Highness.

Samoa PM says Virgin and Air NZ awoken by national carrier

Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi told local Radio 2AP that this is the reason why Virgin was only flying twice a week to Samoa.

A joint venture between Virgin and Samoa concludes in November but Virgin has belatedly applied to fly five flights per week from Australia.

Meanwhile, Tuilaepa said that Air New Zealand is looking at more flights to Samoa using their bigger 777 aircraft.

He said it showed that both Virgin and Air New Zealand were scrambling, and it could have a lot to do with Samoa's intention to re-launch its national carrier.

Samoa urges community support to buy fresh and frozen taro

The new line of frozen products included breadfruit, taro, taamu (Alocasia macrorrhiza) and manioc.

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) and the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS), Laaulialemalietoa Asiata Leuatea P.F. Schmidt launched the new frozen products in front of some 200 people and Samoan media. Minister Laaulialemalietoa Schmidt said they knew that 90 per cent of people who consumed taro in New Zealand were Samoan and he urged them to consider buying Samoa’s fresh and frozen produce.

Eye specialists from China provide free eye surgeries in Samoa

The team comprising of more than 20 specialists also donated equipment for the National Health Services Eye Clinic.

More than 30 patients have completed successful operations.

The visit is part of the city sisterhood agreement inked in 2015 between the Samoa Government and the Huizhou Municipal Government, Guangdong Province in the People’s Republic, according to the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Fiji U-19 dedicates game against Samoa to late goal keeper

The late Lockington is an upcoming goal keeper, who was part of the team to participate in the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship but withdraw prior to the team’s departure due to illness.

Her death was a big blow for the Fiji team but despite of cloud of sadness hovering over them they put their hearts for Francine.

Fiji coach Saroj Kumar said it was tough outing for the Fijian girls who were still visibly shaken by the loss of their teammate and they want to dedicate his side’s valiant performance to Lockington.

Inauguration ceremony for Samoa’s new Head of State

The Legislative Assembly approved the Notice from the Party to the Government to appoint Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II to the office of the Head of State in its sitting on the 5th July 2017. 

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Afioga Leaupepe Toleafoa Tamaaiono Faafisi will issue the Warrant of Appointment for the new Head of State elect prior to the date assigned for the inauguration.

A statement said the outgoing current Head of State Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, has served in the position for 10 years.

Ban on taro from Samoa remains

The territory's director of agriculture, Filifa'atali Mike Fuiava, told a hearing in the Fono that the Samoa Ministry of Agriculture had still not received test results from Germany from samples of plants that had been infected with an unidentified disease.

Filifa'atali said until Samoa provided an analysis of the samples sent to Germany, the ban on taro would continue.

He said if an analysis was not forthcoming from the Samoa government then his officials would make a trip to see the problem for themselves.

Tonga gifted a spot at RWC 2019 in Japan

With the combined results of the 2016 and 2017 cups doubling as World Cup qualifiers, Samoa needed to at least draw with the unbeaten Fijians to overhaul Tonga and reach the tournament in Japan in two years time.

Even a bonus point in defeat might have been enough.

They led 16-14 at half time in Apia but had no answers as Fiji over-ran them in the second half.

Fiji, who secured qualification last week when they defeated Tonga 14-10, scored five tries in total, including a hat-trick to scrumhalf Henry Seniloli.
