Pacific MPs

Preliminary votes show one new Pacific MP

Labour's current position, with 35.8 per cent of the party vote, would secure a seat in the house for first-time list candidate 'Anahila Kanongata'a-Suisuiki.

The longtime social worker is likely to join fellow Tongan Labour MP Jenny Salesa according to the Electoral Commission's current list of successful candidates.

Pacific parliamentary forum underway in NZ

The Speaker of New Zealand's parliament says this is a great opportunity for the parliamentarians to meet with their New Zealand counterparts on major issues in the region.

David Carter says the forum serves as a means of sharing knowledge of issues and parliamentary practices, and enhancing parliamentary democracy in the Pacific.

RNZ reports the parliament will have a special debate on Pacific issues today for the more than 40 forum delegates.
